All About Me...
My name is Kim Warren and I am the Fifth Grade ELAR teacher here at Saginaw Elementary! This will be my sixth year of teaching. I have taught three years in First Grade, two years in Second Grade, and this will be my first year in Fifth Grade! I have spent all summer preparing our classroom library and checking out the latest research for reading and writing development. Irene C. Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell can sum up my core literacy belief in this quote from their book titled Guided Reading:
"Our goal is to give students the opportunity for a literate life - not just to achieve a minimum test score. This means learning how to behave in the ways that are characteristic of real readers and writers; that is, the way literate citizens of the world think, talk, and act."
-Irene C. Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell
We will explore numerous texts within various genres this year. Each student has a "30 Book Challenge" where the goal is to read 30 books within various genres throughout the year. They are already well on their way! We have discussed the importance of being a "wild reader" and "stealing reading time" in-between our daily commitments throughout the school day and at home. You can support your child by encouraging them to read at home nightly.
“Research indicates that time spent reading correlates positively with student performance on standardized tests.”
Your child will also respond to the authentic texts they read and recommend texts to other readers. In writing, they will create texts of their own while referring to mentor texts for inspiration. Your child will have voice and choice in what they learn this year as we work within our reading and writing community. It is going to be an INCREDIBLE year!
Please feel free to contact me any time about your child. I look forward to working with you this year!
