    Coach Whiles began gymnastics for a small club in Midland, TX in 1987 when he was 9 years old and competed in the JO gymnastics program throughout his youth.  As a sophomore in high school he joined the Permian High School gymnastics team where he earned 6 individual and 2 team State Championship Titles over 3 years. 

    After high school Coach Whiles spent two years competing in the NCAA for the United States Air Force Academy.  While at USAFA he broke the school pommel horse record and qualified to the NCAA Regional Championships.  He then transferred to Texas A&M where he was the gymnastics club president and contributed to two NAIGC team National Championship Titles. He completed his BS degree in Computer Science at the University of North Texas in 2002 and spent 6 years working in the private sector before beginning his coaching career.

    In 2008 Coach Whiles was hired as the head gymnastics coach at his alma mater of Permian High School in Odessa, TX.  Coach Whiles spent 4 years coaching at Permian where his boy’s teams earned 3 District Titles and 3 Regional Titles.  His teams all qualified to the State Championships where they finished in 6th, 4th, 3rd, and 2nd place.  His gymnasts also earned 31 individual top 10 State Championship finishes during his tenure.

    In 2012, Coach Whiles was hired as the first head boy’s gymnastics coach for Chisholm Trail High School. He currently coaches middle school gymnastics, 2 beginner gymnastics classes, 2 intermediate classes, and varsity gymnastics.  In his first two years at Chisholm Trail Coach Whiles has had 4 individual qualifiers to the State Championships.

    Coach Whiles maintains an active leadership role on the governing board of the Texas High School Gymnastics Coaches Association as the state webmaster and as a regional delegate on the Men’s Rules Committee.

    Coach Whiles has been married to wife Michelle for 13 years.  They have a 9 year old son, Conner, and 6 year old daughter, Belyn.
    Coach Garmon has been involved with the sport of gymnastics since 1984, his freshman year of high school. He competed for 4 years on Lakeview Centennial’s varsity gymnastics team and served as the team captain in 1988 when they won the State Championship title for THSGCA. During high school, his teams qualified to the State meet 3 years in a row, finishing 3rd in 1986, 2nd in 1987 and State Champions in 1988. In his senior season, he made event finals on Rings, High Bar, Vault and Floor finishing in the top six on each event. Additionally, he competed on club gymnastics teams, Flippers Inc. and Metroplex Gymnastics. From 1988 – 1991, he competed on the Longhorn Gymnastics Team at The University of Texas in Austin. As a freshman, he won the Texas Gymnastics Conference Championship All-Around Title in 1989. And in 1990, his team won the Division III Club Collegiate National Championships in 1990.

    Coach Garmon began coaching gymnastics in the summer of 1989 as a boys’ gymnastics coach for Flippers, Inc. He went on to coach girl’s gymnastics at Crenshaw’s Athletic Club in Austin from 1990-1992. From 1993 – 2003, he coached boys and girls gymnastics for Golden Triangle Gymnastics in Denton. From 2004-2012, he was the boys and girls head coach for all of Keller ISD, which included Keller, Fossil Ridge, Central, and Timber Creek high schools. In that time, he has had 9 different kids chosen for the Texas Senior National Team, one state all-around champion, 18 different individual state qualifiers, that finished in the top 10 in the State, and 5 girls teams qualify to the State meet, finishing 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, and 9th. In 10 years of coaching, the Texas High School Gymnastics Coaches Association has honored him twice as the Region IV Coach of the Year in 2004 and in 2006. In 2007 and 2010 the THSGCA voted him the State Coach of the Year. And in 2009, he was selected as the Assistant head coach for the Texas Senior National Boys Team, traveling to Chicago, Illinois to compete. In five years at EMS ISD, he has had a gymnast that has won back-to-back District Champions, finished 3rd Place All-Around in 2014 Regionals, 20th Place All-Around at the 2013 State meet, and finished 10th Place All-Around at the 2014 State meet.  Also, this gymnast was selected to the National Team Texas as an All-around gymnast in 2015, competing in Ft. Myers Florida.  The Girls Gymnastics Team has taken 3rd Place in 2015 and 2nd Place in 2017 in the District Meet.

     

    His wife, Tommi Lynn Garmon, has been the foundation of their successful 24 years of marriage and his strongest supporter of his coaching career. They have twin 11 year old daughters, Allyson and Elizabeth, and a 6year old daughter, named Summer. He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from the University of North Texas. He earned his teaching certification in secondary math, through ECAP in 2001 and he taught high school math for 12 years at Lewisville ISD and Keller ISD.  

     

    In 2012, he was hired by EMS ISD, as the new girl’s gymnastics coach for Chisholm Trail High School. He currently coaches the gymnastics teams for Ed Willke and Creekview middle schools. At Chisholm Trail High School, he coaches beginner gymnastics classes, one intermediated class, one JV team and 1 Varsity team. He is also serving as a math tutor for all students in need of assistance at Chisholm Trail.
