JROTC celebrates two milestones in May
TX-20105's corps of 140 cadets earned AFJROTC’s Distinguished Unit Award (DUA) for 2016-2017. This award is
based on completing over 2,000 hours of community service and meeting all other headquarters
AFJROTC requirements and tasks. This is the unit’s first DUA and it recognizes the EMS program as
one of the “top-third” in the nation.
Corps Commander, C/Col Ethan Chau shared the news with Saginaw Principal Patrick Torres with a
trophy presentation. Chau recognized this is “just another step in the growth” of the relatively young
program. Last year, the unit earned the Outstanding Organization Award from JROTC. Next year, the
cadets of EM-S will have another opportunity to shine as they host a major HQ inspection. In the
meantime, they will celebrate a great spring for the Corps of Cadets!
In addition, a few days before learning of this award, EMS Air Force JROTC Instructors celebrated a milestone seven years in the making
as they attended the commissioning ceremony of one of their program’s first cadets on May 12. Matt Daskal (SHS
Class of 2013) commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Reserves through the University of North
Texas Army ROTC program. This significant accomplishment for 2nd Lt Daskal marked the first EMS
AFJROTC cadet to go on to earn a commission in the US military.
While both instructors were extremely proud to see how far Matt has gone since starting JROTC as a
sophomore in the spring of 2011, MSgt Walt Raemhild had the extra privilege of joining in the
ceremony. 2nd Lt Daskal selected MSgt Raemhild to render his first military salute as an Army Officer.
This tradition serves as a special thanks to a person’s contributions to the growth of a young officer and
it is rewarded with a shiny silver dollar.
Congratulations to the JROTC for achieving these two awesome milestones!
