    About Mr. Farley

This is Mr. Farley's third year as a pedagogue, and this is his third year at Chisholm Trail high school. He comes to us from Emporia State University (Emporia, Kansas) where he played football for the fighting Hornets and graduated with a B.A.  in Education.

Having known Mr. Farley for some time now, I can honestly and accurately say that  he is thoroughly delighted with his choice of becoming an educator. And  furthermore, I know that I speak for Mr. Farley when I say that there is not a more  life-fulfilling feeling than teaching.

For those of you who are saying to yourself, "this is probably Mr. Farley writing  this..." I must congratulate you on having an unerring sense of direction. But, this is  fun; let's keep going.

As one of his closest companions I have compiled a "Favorites" list, pertaining to Mr.  Farley's most-liked preferences:

    • Movies: He prefers any movie that has made the conscience decision to avoid Brendan Fraser, most notably Donnie Darko, High Fidelity, and Dead Poets Society.

    • Books: He enjoys perusing Young Adult novels; he believes John Green is doing great things. And, Mr. Farley found the recently created trilogy, Red Rising, written by Pierce Brown to be extraordinarily pleasing. But, his all-time favorite has to be "The Catcher in the Rye."

    • Poetry: Poetry, a genre that Mr. Farley approaches with a sincere interest. His favorite poets include Tim Seibles, Gary Soto, Naomi Nye, James Wright, Alan Dugan, and last, but certainly not least, Mr. Charles Simic. He has also grown quite fond of Ross Gay and Idra Novey. Be sure to check out one of Mr. Farley's favorite poems below.

    • Music: Firstly, Led Zeppelin, according to Mr. Farley, is at the top of any musical rating system by a large margin. With that being said, he enjoys any and all music; especially, and indie/alternative rock (e.g. Alt-J; Sublime;Incubus; Milky Chance). Also, Mr. Farley noted that he particularly digs an artist who isn't afraid to be different, or combine genres.

    Making a Fist
    Naomi Shihab Nye

For the first time, on the road north of Tampico,
I felt the life sliding out of me,
a drum in the desert, harder and harder to hear.
I was seven, I lay in the car
watching palm trees swirl a sickening pattern past the glass.
My stomach was a melon split wide inside my skin.
“How do you know if you are going to die?”
    I begged my mother.
We had been traveling for days.
    With strange confidence she answered,
“When you can no longer make a fist.”
Years later I smile to think of that journey,
the borders we must cross separately,
    stamped with our unanswerable woes.
I who did not die, who am still living,
still lying in the backseat behind all my questions,
clenching and opening one small hand.
