Hello and welcome to what I know is going to be a great year at Highland Middle School. I am Mrs. Dorsett, your student’s English Language Arts and Reading teacher. There are just a few things that I wanted to make you aware of for the upcoming school year.
Tutoring Days: Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:50 – 8:20.
Absences: When students are absent, it is their responsibility to come to me and get the work that was missed. Students shall have a time equal to days absent from class plus one day to complete all missed assignments. If they are absent on a day that a project is due, they are expected to turn the project in upon their return.
Late Work: Refer to the HMS Student Handbook.
Grades/Assignments: Please refer to district grading polices that can be found on our district web page.
Supplies: I expect each student to come to class on a daily basis with their binder, a pen/pencil, a library book/book from home and paper.
Discipline: The students need to follow the guidelines set by the HMS Student Handbook. In addition, they need to display appropriate manners and respect to all. For the most part, a verbal warning will be given to the individual or to the class in general. Then, if the inappropriate behavior continues, the student may receive one of the following: detention, teacher/student conference, phone call home, note home, or e-mail home. If the poor behavior continues the student will receive a detention or a referral to the office.
Communication: First and foremost, communication has to be open between the student, parent, and teacher. You may contact me through e-mail at any time. If you have access to e-mail, I highly encourage you to send me a quick e-mail, so I will have it for my records. You may also leave me a voice message or use your student’s planner to communicate with me.
Conference period: 11:20am – 12:15pm
Remind: Please feel free to join my remind group. This is a tool I use to send out a reminder text to students, and their parents, about upcoming grades, assignments, when I have posted to skyward. I feel it is important to keep the communication constant between students, teacher, and parents. If your child is in
1st period- TEXT the number 81010 and in the message section put @mdorset
2nd period- TEXT the number 81010 and in the message section put @mdorsett
3rd period- TEXT the number 81010 and in the message section put @b61890
Good Strategies for This Year: Students are highly encouraged to read for at least 25 minutes each night.
I’m looking forward to a wonderful and successful year with you and your child. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
