September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. While suicide prevention is important to address year-round, Suicide Prevention Awareness Month provides a dedicated time to come together with collective passion and strength around a difficult topic. The truth is, just one conversation can change a life, and we can all benefit from honest conversations about mental health and suicide (http://www.nami.org).
Suicide is the second leading cause of death in adolescence. Wayside Middle School, along with EMS ISD, is committed to being a competent school community in suicide prevention. As a district, we train our staff to identify students who may be at risk for suicide, refer students to counselors, and work with parents to provide support for students.
