Mr. David Kirkley
David Kirkley is Director of Bands at Boswell High School. Prior to his appointment at Boswell HS, Mr. Kirkley taught at Arlington High School Opens a New Window., Martin High School Opens a New Window., Naaman Forest High School Opens a New Window.and Lancaster High School Opens a New Window.. He holds both a Bachelors of Music Education and a Master of Music in Trumpet Performance from the University of Arkansas Opens a New Window.. During Mr. Kirkley’s graduate studies, he also served as trumpet teaching assistant to Mr. Robert Bright Opens a New Window.and band conducting teaching assistant to Mr. Eldon Janzen Opens a New Window..
Mr. Kirkley comes from a family of strong musical tradition. His mother was a concert pianist and performed for noted conductors Arthur Rubinstein Opens a New Window., Arturo Toscanini Opens a New Window.and Leonard Bernstein Opens a New Window.. His father played tuba in the Houston Symphony, under the famous conductor Leopold Stokowski Opens a New Window., and later enjoyed a successful career in designing computer controls for NASA and the space industry.
Mr. Kirkley grew up as an athlete and a musician living in many areas of the country including Florida, Utah, and Texas. He graduated high school at Lakeview Centennial High School Opens a New Window. in the Garland Independent School District Opens a New Window.. Mr. Kirkley earned the John Philip Sousa Award for outstanding musicianship and then chose the full scholarship offer from the University of Arkansas and began a career as a musician and music educator. While a senior at the University of Arkansas, Mr. Kirkley was selected to perform in the 1984 Olympic All-American Marching Band.
Mr. Kirkley has performed trumpet and cornet for a variety of musical production companies including the Tulsa Ballet, the Arkansas Symphony, the Dallas Opera and the Dallas Wind Symphony. He has performed in musical theatre from productions ranging from Puccini to Bernstein and has been involved with musical theatre and ballet orchestras for over 30 years. Student musical theatre ensembles under his guidance have garnered outstanding performance awards in each of the past 4 decades.
Mr. Kirkley’s professional affiliations include: Texas Music Educator's Association Opens a New Window.(TMEA), Texas Bandmaster's Association Opens a New Window. (TBA), Phi Beta Mu Opens a New Window.International Bandmaster's Hall of Fame Fraternity, and the Texas Music Adjudicators Association Opens a New Window.(TMAA). Mr. Kirkley has also served TMEA in the leadership roles of: Region 5 Jazz Chairman, Region 5 Band President, and current Region 2 Vice President. He has served UIL as a judge and contest host for numerous UIL events.
Mr. Kirkley is married to Debbie, and they have had two children in the Boswell Band programs: Matthew and Laura.
