Certification Information

Teachers must hold the appropriate certification for the position to which they are hired or assigned. In addition to content area certification, some assignments require supplemental certifications, such as English as a Second Language (ESL) and/or Special Education.

Once a teacher earns a Standard Certificate, it must be renewed with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) every five years.

EMS ISD may also utilize its District of Innovation (DOI) plan to fill hard-to-staff positions. A DOI waiver provides a one-year pathway to certification. Teachers hired under a DOI waiver must enroll in a TEA-approved Alternative Certification Program (ACP) of their choice to earn the required certification for their assignment.

There are several routes to becoming a certified teacher:

  • Bachelor's degree in education
  • Alternative Certification Program (ACP)
  • Out-of-State Teacher Certification Transfer

Additionally, EMS ISD partners with educational aides and paraprofessionals who wish to become certified teachers.
