TASSP Region 11 Outstanding Middle School Assistant Principal of the Year

Leah Roberts, Wayside Middle School assistant principal, has been selected to represent the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals (TASSP) as the Region 11 Outstanding Middle School Assistant Principal of the Year.

TASSP recognizes outstanding principals and assistant principals from the 20 regional education centers in the state. As a Region 11 winner, Roberts is eligible to compete for the state title of Texas Assistant Principal of the Year. School administrators are nominated and chosen by their peers within their regions. Nominations are based upon exemplary performance and outstanding leadership.

“I am honored to have been considered for this award, and am blessed to serve among such wonderful leadership in Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD where I know that every move is made to do what is best to foster excellence in every student to ensure their success," Roberts said. "I truly am thankful and humbled to have an opportunity to represent Region 11, which is filled with so many wonderful, deserving administrators.”

Over her 11 years in education, Roberts has been honored to work for Alvin ISD, Mansfield ISD, and finally Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD. Prior to becoming an assistant principal at Wayside Middle School in 2014, Roberts taught seventh and eighth grade English Language Arts and Reading, Communication Applications, and AVID all at the middle school level. Roberts attended Concordia University at Austin and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in English. She then attended Lamar University to earn her Master’s Degree in Educational Administration. 

Roberts has proudly lead her campus in incorporating the Huddle Program during daily advisory time to strengthen connectedness and empathy at the middle school level. Huddle allows an opportunity for an adult advisor to meet regularly during the school day with a group of students to provide academic/social-emotional mentorship and support, to create personalization within the school, and to facilitate a small peer community of learners in order to promote student success both in and out of the classroom.

In addition, she has worked to introduce and strengthen restorative discipline processes at Wayside in order to lower the recidivism rate of classroom disruption, and looks forward to further work in this area in the coming year.
