Watson HS seniors form inaugural Senior Service Committee
The inaugural Elmer C. Watson Senior Service Committee, consisting of nine seniors, has committed to implementing two volunteer opportunities for Watson High School students this fall.
For their first project, Socktober, they have collected over 400 pairs of socks, along with several jackets and blankets that they will soon distribute to homeless shelters in Fort Worth.
"We chose socks because there are so many homeless people out there and with it getting colder, this was one way we could help them," Watson senior Cami Shimakonis said. "I hope to make a difference and help people out. Being on the Senior Service Committee, I can help my fellow students and serve the community. I want to help any way I can."
The second project, Paint a Pumpkin, will entail several Watson students working with the patients at Cook Children's Hospital to paint pumpkins and to also serve the patients cupcakes.
"There's no one better to help than little kids who can't Trick or Treat," Watson senior Cody Foster said. "I hope to show that you have to give your time to people who need more, and a small gesture can make a huge difference."
Watson senior Vanessa Campos agreed.
"The pumpkin painting will help make the kids at Cook Children's feel better by throwing them a celebration to maybe take their minds off of their illness," Campos said. "I wanted to be on the committee because I want give back and help out the less fortunate."
There will be four committees total at Watson this year, each coinciding with Watson's nine week periods.
"Because of our unique situation at Watson, students graduate throughout the year," Watson teacher Mary Ann Foley said. "Each nine weeks, a new committee will be formed from a representative of each advisory class. That enables the members to take the ideas and plans back to each advisory. I am very proud of the students on the committee because they hit the ground running with their plans. As a team, they discussed opportunities, determined needs to meet their goal, and implemented their ideas."
