The top second-grade readers from each elementary school campus in the district competed at the District Reading Bee on November 1 at Parkview Elementary School. Saginaw Elementary student Sophie Alonzo was named the District Champion and will advance to the Regional Reading Bee hosted by Score a Goal in the Classroom on December 8 where she will compete against other second-grade readers from all over North Texas.

Elkins Elementary student Jayden Rosendahl was named district runner-up.

The Reading Bee requires students to read several texts orally and answer a series of comprehension questions. They are judged on their accuracy, fluency, and level of thinking.

"These rock star readers read texts written as high as a 12th-grade level," said Carlynn Briley, EMS ISD Early Literacy Specialist. "We are celebrating these amazing second-grade readers from across the district!"
