Coach Barrin Simpson, football Defensive Coordinator and AVID teacher at Chisholm Trail High School, has been announced as part of the 2019 Southeastern Conference Football Legends class earning him a trip to Atlanta, Ga., in December to be honored at the SEC Legends Dinner and recognized at the SEC Football Championship Game.
A former Mississippi State football star, Simpson is hailed as one of the greatest linebackers in Bulldog history. From 1996-1999, Simpson racked up 296 tackles, five sacks, and three interceptions. As a senior, Simpson became the first Bulldog linebacker to be named first-team All-American since 1981. In that same year, he was also a semifinalist for the Butkus Award, an award that honors the nation’s best linebackers.
In 2000, Simpson played as a free agent with the New England Patriots. He went on to lead a 10-year career with the Canadian Football League, earned the League’s Most Outstanding Rookie Award in 2001, and was named CFL All-Star six times from 2001-2007.
Simpson joined the EMS ISD family in 2018 as Defensive Coordinator for Chisholm Trail High School.
“I’ve actually wanted to live here in DFW since I was 13 years old,” Simpson said. “I grew up a Cowboys fan so that probably had a little bit to do with that desire.”
Simpson credits his coaching philosophy to the incredible coaches he has had over the years, namely Coach Jim Tompkins at Mississippi State and Coach Gary Etcheverry in his rookie season. He felt they truly cared about him as a person and modeled good, honorable character. Simpson believes player development takes hard work and determination from both the player and coach and feels it is his obligation to focus not just on developing the athletic ability of a player, but character development as well.
Simpson and his wife, Tammie, with their three children, Atira, Avery, and Bryce, love living in North Texas and writing their family legacy here.
“All of my athletic accomplishments are definitely dreams fulfilled, but my greatest accomplishment in life is my family,” he said.
