Congratulations to the winners of the first-ever EMS ISD Poetry Slam!

The fourth-grade district winner is Corrine Kested for her poem, "Blank Sheet of Paper." Corrine is in Ms. Beal's class at Eagle Mountain Elementary. Fourth-grade honorable mention goes to Ar’Naiya Franklin for her poem, "Missing Homework." She is in Ms. Riddle’s class at Elkins Elementary.

The fifth-grade district  winner is Gavin Trevino for his poem, "The Basketball Star." He is in Ms. Warren's class at Saginaw Elementary. Fifth-grade honorable mention goes to Reagan Baker for her poem, "The Truth." She is also in Ms. Warren's class.

As part of a study on poetry, participating fourth- and fifth-grade classrooms across the district wrote and recited their own poems to determine a grade level campus winner. The winners from each campus went on to compete in the district contest via Skype on January 16-17. Winners were announced on January 23.

You can watch the competition here.

The event was the brainchild of Instructional Technologist, Robert Eikenberry, who was looking for a unique way to bring poetry to life for these elementary students.

"Our Poetry Slam is a great way for students to learn about and practice the art of poetry," he said, adding that the idea would not have become reality without support from many. "A huge thank you to all participants, teachers and staff members who made this event a success. I am proud to work in a district that values innovation, student engagement and collaboration."

District and campus leaders called the first-ever Poetry Slam a success and are already planning on making it an annual event.
