Highland Middle School Leader Named Regional Principal of the Year

Posted Wednesday, August 26, 2020

David Coker The Texas Association of Secondary School Principals has selected Highland Middle School principal David Coker as Region 11’s Outstanding Principal of the Year.

Coker has been in the education field for more than 30 years, and he is in his fourth year as principal at Highland Middle School. He began his career as a coach and science teacher and says he considers his job a calling.

The principal was inspired to become an educator when he taught a water safety class during college. One of his students was afraid to swim, but by the end of the course the student was doing laps in the pool.

“It’s something I knew I had to do for the rest of my life,” Coker said.

School administrators are nominated and chosen by their peers within their regions. Nominations are based upon exemplary performance and outstanding leadership. As a Region 11 winner, Coker is eligible to compete for the state title of Texas Principal the Year.

Coker will be honored in June during the Josten’s Night of the Stars Awards Dinner held in conjunction with the TASSP Summer. He will be presented with an award and recognized in a commemorative book entitled “Texas Principals, Texas Heroes”.

 Congratulations, David! We are #emsproud!
