Education and Training Students Awarded Gold Medals at FCCLA National Competition

Three students from the Education and Training program at the Hollenstein Career and Technology Center were awarded national gold medals at the at the FCCLA Hybrid National Leadership Conference June 27 - July 1, 2021.

Due to COVID-19 protocols across the nation, the trio competed virtually and submitted their national entries by video in April and were awarded during the conference.

Saginaw High School 2021 graduate Patricia Gamez won first in the nation in the category Teach and Train Level 3. Boswell High School senior Rebecca Fassett, right behind Gamez, won second in the nation in the category Teach and Train Level 3. SHS senior Kyler Turner claimed sixth in nation in the category Nutrition and Wellness Level 3.  

In Gamez’s project titled “The Theorem of Teaching,” she researched and shadowed eighth-grade mathematics teacher Mylinda Leatherman at Highland Middle School as part of her practicum internship course at HCTC. Throughout the year she developed a portfolio including her own theorem of what makes a successful teacher.  

Through Fassett’s project titled "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Star Event," she created a professional portfolio, shadowed first-grade teacher Marissa Trujillo at Parkview Elementary, and promoted literacy by creating hands-on activities related to "There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Books." She developed lessons, created sequencing cards, and built an interactive Velcro anchor chart where students helped the old lady from the well-known children’s series “swallow” a sight word, and more.

Turner's Nutrition and Wellness project was titled "Steps to Sustenance." She created a portfolio and oral presentation on how she tracked food intake and physical activity for herself and her family for seven days. She determined goals and strategies for improving their overall health and developed a four-week menu plan to meet her family's nutritional needs. 

Since 2017, seven EMS ISD students have placed first or second in the nation, and nine have placed in the top ten at nationals.
