Saginaw High Student Wins National Art Award

SHS Student Katherine LeSaginaw High School student Katherine Le has earned national recognition as a 2025 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards National Silver Medal Winner in Digital Art.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are one of the nation’s most prestigious programs honoring young artists and writers. Katherine’s digital illustration, Different Than I Imagined, will be featured in the online galleries at artandwriting.org, and her name will appear in Yearbook 2025, a publication highlighting the work of National Medalists.

Katherine’s piece dives deep into the themes of identity and the evolving nature of growing up. Her artist statement shares the inspiration behind the work:

SHS Student Katherine Le's artwork titled "Different Than I Imagined"“You’re different than I imagined,” the young girl remarks, eyeing her older counterpart. Unburdened by expectations, she examines herfuture self with skepticism. The woman before her is the epitome of perfection, every detail meticulously curated—from her flawless makeup to her polished shoes. Every feature was deliberately designed to convey competence and sophistication. The young girl, who once believed in a future of fun and adventure, now feels disappointed. Carefree days of play have been replaced by corporate realities. Hoping to reclaim her identity, the young girl attempts to remove the layers of makeup—attempts to discard this sophisticated persona and return to her authentic self. However, she’s unable to revise what has been written. Ultimately, we must embrace change, regardless of the glory days. This illustration represents how life is not about reclaiming what was lost, rather about accepting its evolving nature.”

Art teacher Tara Croft shared the news with pride, calling it a first for the Saginaw High art program.
“We’re thrilled to share that Saginaw’s art program has achieved another first!” Croft said. “Katherine’s outstanding work is a reflection of her vision, talent, and dedication.”

Carla Hardy, Director of Fine Arts, praised the submission, calling it “incredible” and “a remarkable recognition of her talent and thought-provoking artwork.”

Superintendent Dr. Jerry Hollingsworth also shared his congratulations, saying, “I am so proud of our exceptional fine arts staff, our programs, and the amazing students who are soaring to new heights every day!”

Katherine’s national honor is a powerful reminder of the talent thriving within EMS ISD and the endless possibilities when students are encouraged to explore their creativity.
