Comanche Springs Teacher Recognized for Saving Student’s Life
Originally posted on April 14, 2025
When Presley Smith stepped onto the playground for recess duty at Comanche Springs Elementary School, she expected the usual bursts of laughter that are common at recess as children play. What she didn’t expect was a life-or-death moment that would call on her instincts, training and deep care for her students.
In an instant, Smith noticed one of her first-graders in distress, choking and unable to breathe. Without hesitation, she rushed to Malachi Lenoir's side and acted quickly, clearing a deflated balloon from his airway and saving his life.
“In a moment of crisis, when I noticed my student choking, I acted instinctively to remove the object,” Smith said. “As a teacher, it's my privilege to care for my students. I am incredibly thankful I was in the right place to help save a life. I love each of the kids here at Comanche Springs and I'm so grateful I have the opportunity to be there for them every day.”
Thanks to Smith’s quick response, Lenoir is doing well, and back to being his kind, energetic self.
We are #EMSproud of Presley Smith for her quick thinking and actions when one of her students needed her most.
