EMS Nutrition Services earns Texas Department of Agriculture award
The EMS ISD Nutrition Services Department has earned the "Best of the Bunch Award" for success in the 2016 Local Products Challenge. Presented by the Texas Department of Agriculture, this award recognizes EMS ISD's commitment to making good nutrition a key to our district's educational success.
Winners of this award successfully incorporated local ingredients from Texas during the month of October in at least three of the following meal components: milk, protein, fruits, vegetables or grains. This challenge helps to strengthen Texas agriculture and demonstrates commitment to developing good nutritional habits for the young Texans we are serving.
"By serving Texas agricultural products as part of school meals and offering students an opportunity to learn about agriculture and locally grown food, the nutrition professionals in your district have taken the extra steps necessary to introduce students to local food and help them make smart nutritional choices," writes TDA Commissioner Sid Miller. "In addition, they helped to support your local economy, farmers and ranchers. Your team's commitment to advancing academic achievement through good nutrition is truly commendable."
Participation in TDA’s Local Products Challenge continues to grow. More than 140 school districts participated in the 2016 Local Products Challenge, with 77 earning a Best of the Bunch Award highlighting efforts to serve local products in school cafeterias. This is the third consecutive year that EMS ISD has completed the Local Products Challenge.
