EMS ISD Discovery STEM Camp for middle school girls registration is open, limited spots
The first ever EMS ISD Discovery STEM camp for middle school girls,
incoming sixth, seventh and eighth graders, will be
held July 26-29, 2017 from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. each day. The camp is limited to
the first 25 EMS ISD girls that sign up. Since the camp is funded with a grant
from Lions Quest, there is no charge to parents, and lunch and snacks are provided.
“The camp will engage
girls in STEM thinking including problem solving, critical thinking,
engineering, collaboration, creativity, and effective communication,” said Theresa
Parisi, EMS ISD Science Coordinator PreK-12. “We have teamed with Lions Quest
to support STEM thinking with social and emotional learning to build skills and
confidence in our middle school girls. The girls will explore engineering
principals and design challenges that surround us in everyday life. The
students will enjoy planning for a better tomorrow as they explore the concept
of urban infrastructure and work in teams to design a dream school.”
Each day, the girls will take part in hands-on labs, engineering
challenges, fun thematic activity breaks, and STEM career connections. The
framework of the camp has been developed by Discovery Education.
“I hope to not only ignite the STEM spark in our middle school
girls, but to keep the fire burning,” Parisi said. “Research indicates that
girls interest in STEM peaks at age 11 and is at its lowest between the ages of
13 and 15. Exposure to STEM thinking and STEM fields, exposure to female
mentors in the field, and encouragement are needed to sustain the interest in
our middle school girls. It is exciting to team with Lions Quest. I plan to
follow this first group of 25 girls and offer additional opportunities to
continue to build their interest in STEM.”
