Effie Center expanding to Saginaw HS
Beginning February 7, students at Saginaw High School will have a free, safe, and engaging place to hang out and connect with friends after school thanks to an ongoing partnership with the Effie Center.
The new after-hours program will be located at Saginaw High School in the Rough Rider cafeteria and courtyard. The Effie Center provides a safe, drug free environment for high school students to meet friends, connect, learn, and build relationships after school.
Students who attend the program will enjoy supervised, unstructured “down” time with options to participate in recreational activities or work on homework and study with other students. Snacks are provided each day the Center is open.
Indoor and outdoor activities will be offered, along with occasional seminars on obtaining a job and applying for college. Community and parent volunteers serve as mentors and encouragers to students who attend the program. Mirna Cano will be the site director.
The Effie Center also participates in crisis assistance for families with acute needs. Counselors from across the district work with the Center to provide emergency funds and resources to EMS ISD students and families in times of crisis.
The Effie Center, a 501©(3) non-profit organization, has been a part of the EMS community for the last six years. The first location is across the street from Boswell High School and serves nearly 100 Boswell students each day.
