AVID Signing Day Celebrates Middle School Scholars

Boswell High School celebrated 50 Creekview and Wayside Middle School eighth-graders at the inaugural BHS AVID Signing Days at the end of February.

A total of 27 Creekview students committed to continue taking AVID classes at Boswell during a signing on Friday, February 28. Wayside students, 23 in total, committed to their AVID path on Monday, February 24.

Administrators created the events to celebrate scholars much like high school athletes are recognized during college signing days.

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a nonprofit program that trains educators to help students prepare for college, careers and life.

“AVID teaches you all the things you wish you knew in high school before you went to college,” said Jennifer Torres, BHS AVID teacher.

In addition to learning interpersonal skills and taking college-level notes, AVID scholars are required to apply for scholarships before graduating. As of early March, Boswell seniors have earned an estimated $545,000 in scholarships.

Boswell administrators say they plan to continue signing days each year.
