With Five C’s over five years, Ed Willkie Middle School counselor Katie Munk believes lives can be changed forever.
And 10 Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD students will begin that journey this summer.
Munk is the driving force behind the C5 Foundation coming to EM-S ISD. This five-year leadership program has the mission to change the odds for high-potential youth from risk filled environments, inspiring them to pursue personal success, preparing them for leadership
roles in college, work and their communities.
The 5 C’s encourage youth to be:
- Character-Driven;
- Community-Focused;
- Challenge-Ready;
- College-Bound; and
- Committed to a Better Future.
In its first year in the program, EM-S ISD will send 10 students to the program: Ed Wilkie Middle School students Jaclyn Aguirre, Sebastian (Alex) Gain, Javonta Guyette, Mario Marroquin, Tyler Savage and Kade Taylor; and Prairie Vista Middle School students Veronica Finley, Harrison Haskell, Sarah Rea and Karla Tejada.
Each program year begins with a summer signature experience that sets the goals and teaches the skills youth will need to be successful during the next year.
First-year students attend Camp Leadership U: three weeks at the Parrie Haynes Youth Ranch near Killeen, designed to introduce C5 Texans to leadership concepts, the C5 program and to establish the relationships and culture that will support their success for the next five years.
The C5 program includes carefully sequenced, age appropriate learning experiences that provide a seamless flow of learning and growth across a five-year program. Each year includes curriculum in four key areas:
- Leadership Development;
- Social Awareness;
- College and Career Preparation; and
- Community Activism.
