Ed Willkie Middle School
UIL A+ Academics
Who: 6th, 7th, and 8th graders are invited to participate in a variety of academic subject areas to show their skills and represent Ed Willkie Middle School. Students must prepare for competition through practices and take home materials. Students must also be passing all classes to be eligible for competition.
What: Students can compete in a variety of academic subject areas that are tested in a variety of ways. Subjects include:
- Art
- Calculator Skills
- Chess
- Dictionary Skills
- Editorial Writing (7th/8th only)
- Impromptu Speaking (7th/8th only)
- Listening Skills
- Maps/Graphs/Charts
- Math
- Music Memory
- Number Sense
- Oral Reading
- Ready Writing
- Science (7th/8th only)
- Social Studies
- Spelling
Descriptions for each subject and their specific competition expectations are available in the powerpoint.Each grade level can have 3 students compete, with the exception of Music Memory and Art, which can have 5 for each grade level.The amount of students interested in each subject will dictate if there will be tryouts held.Students will compete against their peers from within EMS ISD that are in the same grade level.When: Practices will be weekly for each subject area starting the week after Thanksgiving break and continuing through the week of competition. The district wide competition will be on Saturday, February 25th.
Where: Practices will be held at EWMS and the competition will be at Ed Willkie Middle School.
How Much: Competition in UIL is at no cost to the student. Students will have the opportunity to buy a UIL t-shirt to wear to the competition, but it is not a requirement.
What To Do Next: Look over the descriptions of the competitions and find one (or more) that you are interested in. Then look over the schedule of practices and make arrangements to attend the first practice. You will receive even more information about the competition at this first meeting.
