Word Processing (5 weeks|November 11- December 17)

 
During these five weeks, students will learn and review basic word processing skills. We will finish up this unit with a Holiday project.

Lesson Plans

Week 1 

Every grade level will begin with 5 minutes of keyboarding practice from one of the keyboarding websites on their Activities page.
Next, students will complete the word processing activities below. For kindergarten, the word processing activity is intended to be done together as a class.

Word Processing (Complete as a Class)
Complete the Fall Poem Generator together.
Have students suggest words to complete the poem, and then use the button to create it. Copy and paste the text into Word. Encourage students to contribute ideas of how you could change the text (font, size, color, justification) and demonstrate the use of clipart and borders (if time).
1st Grade

-In Microsoft Word - Review and practice typing the letters of the alphabet (upper & lower case) with the goal of completing all of the letters so that they can practice typing their first and last name. Full Directions Here.

In KidPix - Students will type their name and/or letters of the alphabet. Once they have typed letters and/or their name encourage students to change their font/size/color.

First Grade

Write a Thanksgiving letter of what they like about Thanksgiving. Add shapes, clip art, fonts and colors.

 

Second Grade

Students use the template in PowerPoint to type things they are thankful for and add clip art or pictures to it.

Techknowledge Lesson - Keying Text
Students create a  sentence. (Ex. I like turkey. )with a capital and a period. Then demonstrate how to change the color and font style.
1st Grade

-In Microsoft Word - Have students complete the Jingle Bells Activity. Students open the word processor and increas the font size. Teach students how to use the Backspace and Undo buttons to fix mistakes. Students type the words to Jingle Bells on their document and then insert the clipart for the various words.
2nd Grade

Living and Non-Living Copy and Paste Word document from the activities page (full directions here). They will need to solve the math problems and cut and paste the number pictures for their answers.
3rd - 5th Grade

Word Processing
-Students will complete a fun activity were they will learn how to insert and manage clipart and text boxes for illustration and annotation (full directions here). Students will insert clipart of a monkey (or other appropriate animal if you so choose) and use text wrapping to position the monkey in the middle of the page. The students will then insert text boxes for Head, Shoulder, Knees, and Toes. Instruct the students to change the font size to 24 and change the font style. The directions for this are very detailed and include screenshots that were obtained in Office 2010.


Week 4 

Students will complete the Thanksgiving Activities that are found below using the word processing skills that they have learned.


Kindergarten

In KidPix - Students will type "Happy Holidays" and decorate their picture by adding clipart or stamps, and changing the font.
1st Grade
Word Processing
Students will create a Holiday card or sign in Microsoft Word and decorate their card/sign by making the text an appropriate size/font/color, and adding clipart.
2nd - 5th Grade
Word Processing
Students will create a Happy Holidays Greeting. Students will format their text with font styles and use appropriate font sizes to fill up a single page. They will also add clipart of appropriate sizes and wrap text appropriately if needed (3-5). See examples on this page. 
 
Week 5 
Grades K-5th
Students will finish any of their Word Processing activities and  visit Holiday sites that are posted.

 This is an optional activity. You will need  Orange and green paper and the templates below.
The students type what they are Thankful for in the template and change the fonts to their preference.
Then they can be cut and put together with a brad. (Ask teachers for supplies)
