Five EMS ISD seniors representing Boswell and Chisholm Trail high schools have been named Commended Scholars in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program. Four EMS ISD seniors representing Boswell and Chisholm Trail high schools have been named National Hispanic Scholars in the 2020-2021 National Hispanic Recognition Program. 

National Merit Commended Scholars

Commended students are Hunter Boniface (Boswell HS), Nathan Horton (Boswell HS), Jacob Holz (Chisholm Trail HS), Sienna Miertschin (Chisholm Trail HS), and Natalia Moran (Boswell HS).  

The National Merit Commended Scholarship program recognizes students for outstanding academic promise based on their scores and demonstrated ability on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which is typically taken during a student’s junior year of high school. 

About 34,000 Commended Scholars throughout the nation are recognized. Commended students placed among the top 50,000 scorers out of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2021 competition by taking the 2019 PSAT/NMSQT. With this designation, they can become candidates for special scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses through the National Merit program. 

National Hispanic Scholars

The National Hispanic Scholars are Diego Caballero (Boswell HS), Elizabeth Duque (Chisholm Trail HS), Natalia Moran (Boswell HS), and Camila Solis (Chisholm Trail HS). 

The National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) recognizes approximately 5,000 Hispanic or Latino students each year who take the PSAT their junior year. As with the National Merit Scholarship Program, NHRP uses the junior year PSAT/NMSQT as the qualifying test. NHRP is administered directly by the College Board and Scholarship America. 

NHRP recognition requires a minimum 3.5 GPA and is open to students who are at least one-quarter Hispanic or Latino descent.

Students can be recognized by both programs.
